Trash and Recycling News

Calling all neighbors .if you have not joined the Homeowner's Association, purchased a street light or begun to recycle, DO SO NOW!!!  All of these things help in supporting our great neighborhood.

Everyone is wondering when recycling will begin again.  Well, good news Braeswood Place!  The City of Houston will be sending those big blue trucks through our wonderful neighborhood the week of November 3rd.  (Remember, South of the Bayou pick up is on Mondays and North of the Bayou is on Tuesdays).

Also, remember you can take your glass items to be recycled at almost any recycling center.  For ease, at 5900 Westpark, drive your car through, open the trunk and they do the rest.  If you are overrun with recycling, and can't wait until November, you may take all of your recycling at any time to this location as well.

Allowable Items for Curbside Recycling:

·         Mail, envelopes & office paper

·         Newspaper, magazines/catalogs & telephone books

·         Plastic (#1 - 5 & 7 NOT 6)

·         Aluminum, tin & steel cans

·         Flattened corrugated cardboard (no food, cereal, pizza or soda cartons)

·         Used motor oil (in a non-chemical/non-detergent screw top container placed outside the bin)

Any other recycling questions, please contact me at snoopskaya@sbcglobal.net.

CURBSIDE RECYCLING RESUMES AFTER IKE

The City of Houston will resume its Curbside Recycling Program beginning Monday, October 27, 2008.  The program was temporarily suspended after Hurricane Ike as the curbside recycling crews were assisting the yard trimmings staff with storm debris cleanup in the "Sweep and Bag" Program.

Curbside Recycling services are provided on alternating weeks to 162,000 Houstonians.

Ø      Week of November 3rd:  Residents on the "A" week will begin receiving normal collection on their regular pickup day. BPHA Area

To find out your collection day, please log onto www.houstonsolidwaste.org and click on "Schedules Via Zip Codes" (or directly www.houstontx.gov/solidwaste/schedule.html ).

"We thank our Curbside Recycling customers for their patience as we worked to clear Houston neighborhoods of the massive volume of storm debris.  In addition to resuming our Curbside Recycling Program, our recycling drop-offs will remain open to give all Houston residents the opportunity to recycle," said Solid Waste Management Department Director Harry J. Hayes.

Hayes added, "The 'Sweep and Bag' debris removal program has been very successful in remedying the amount of material which could have potentially clogged our storm drains and exacerbated flooding in highly prone areas.  With next week's efforts of 'sweeping' the city by quadrant, rear loader crews will have made three (3) complete passes throughout the city picking up bagged and light storm debris.   Early reports indicate that our rearloader load volume is significantly higher for the same period last year."

For new developments in the department's response to Hurricane Ike, please log on to www.houstonsolidwaste.org or call 3-1-1, the City's Customer Service Hotline. The Solid Waste Management Department provides solid waste service to the citizens of Houston through the collection, disposal and recycling of discarded material in a manner that is safe, efficient, environmentally sound and cost-effective.

200 DEBRIS REMOVAL CREWS TO REMOVE HAZARDOUS TREES AND LIMBS

Approximately 200 City-contracted debris removal crews will be deployed throughout Houston Monday, October 20, 2008 through Sunday, October 26, 2008 to remove hazardous, leaning trees and hanging limbs. The trees and limbs must pose an immediate threat to lives, public health and safety and located in the public right-of-way.

Eligible scope of work includes trees having a diameter of six (6) inches or greater that are leaning at an angle greater than 30 degrees, as well as hanging limbs greater than two (2) inches in diameter.  Trees smaller than six (6) inches in diameter and limbs two (2) inches or less in diameter are the homeowner's responsibility.
