Major Renovations through Volunteers and Generous DonationsIn 1997, a group of concerned residents began work to raise funds to renovate Karl Young Park, located at the corner of Stella Link and Tartan. Over $350,000 was raised during Phase I of the project and the renovations were completed in 2000. Three years ago, volunteers began fundraising efforts for Phase II of the Karl Young Park Renovation Project. We met that goal also, and, raised an additional $115,000. The funds we have raised have come from some extremely generous individual donations as well as corporate donations, private foundations and a City of Houston grants program. We have also raised several hundred dollars from a group of very enthusiastic children who make up our Karl Young Park Kid’s KIub. In addition, we enjoyed a wonderful Fun Day in the Park that raised over $2200 for the project. Finally, we have received a portion of the Braeswood Place Home & Garden Tour proceeds from the last five years.
The addition of shade structures allows playground usage to be stretched further into the summer months and well into the late morning hours even on the hottest summer days. The shade structure material significantly decreases both TJVA and UVB rays. In addition, the cloth lowers the temperature under the structure between 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit. An additional benefit of these shade structures is that they increase the lifespan of the play structures themselves by protecting them from the ravaging effects of our strong Texas sun.
